My skin has been very happy this summer, which is not always the case. With travel, exposure to the sun and chlorine pools, my skin tends to become quite stressed. Yet with my current routine and diligence, my skin is thriving through the stressors. I’m always quite regular in my routine, only changing up masks according to my needs and occasionally switching up moisturizers in regard to the days activities. One important change I’ve made is that I’ve ridded my routine of harsh cleansers – anything that makes my skin feel “squeaky clean” is gone from my daily regimen and replaced with only the gentlest and most hydrating options. This has made a tremendous difference in my dry skin, which never feels dry these days but quite dewy actually.
Even though its mid-summer, my skin still craves layers. Ultra nourishing oils, always topped with a water-based moisturizer works best for me.
In the AM
Cleanser: Most days, upon waking, I just do a simple cleanse with Kahina’s Moroccan Rosewater* and a cotton ball. Honestly, I used to ‘eye roll’ when I heard of others using only this simple technique to cleanse, but I’m a convert. Its gentle, effective and doesn’t take away from the skin, but only adds. Kahina’s Rosewater is rich in minerals, featuring Rose Damascena from Morocco’s Valley of Roses and 100% steam distilled water collected from the Dades Gorge. It has a unique musky scent and it even removes waterproof eyeliner. If I feel like I need some AM exfoliation, I’ll use the One Love Organics Brand New Day, I love how smooth and nourished my skin feels after using it – it’s a long-standing fave.
Serum: I then follow-up with Twelve Beauty Moisture Level Serum, which I discovered though June’s Boxwalla Beauty Box. This is the perfect base for oils and I so highly recommend it. It’s a light, water-based slippery fluid that contains antioxidants and sodium hyaluronate, making it the perfect base for your face oil. I love the texture and it makes my skin feel plump.
Oils: Lilfox is my current brand crush. I was kindly sent some products back in February and have been using both their Maracuja + Rose Youthful Vixen Face Nectar* and Prickly Pear Illuminating Beauty Nectar* for a few months now. I have developed a deep love for this brand, their beautifully crafted products just work so well for my skin. The face masks deliver incredible results and I’ll be dishing more on that soon. My skin instantly loved the texture, scent and deep hydration of both the Maracuja and PPSO oils, and over time, with daily use, my skin appears more even-toned, brighter and more luminous, not to mention well hydrated. I apply 2-3 drops of the Maracuja + Rose Oil first allowing some time for it to absorb, then mist with the Lilfox Aphrodite Rose Toning Mist* – which smells exquisite, like the dew on a Spring morning (too much?). I follow up with two drops of the PPSO on most days, only skipping this step on very hot and humid days. More on the oils and their benefits below…
- Maracuja + Rose Youthful Vixen Face Nectar – If you want a more youthful glow, this oil is for you! It’s great for all skin types and works to stimulate collagen production, plump the skin, soften fine lines and it undoubtedly creates a more youthful glow
- Prickly Pear Illuminating Beauty Nectar – If you want to brighten and even out the skin tone, then this one is for you! I swear by PPSO for its magical skin brightening effects and have so for years. It also provides ample moisture to the skin and works to calm inflammation, soften fine lines and improve the clarity and radiance of the skin.
Moisturizer: I’ve been a huge fan of the Josh Rosebrook Nutrient Day Cream SPF 30 for about two years now, its perfect for summer. It features a gorgeous line-up of ingredients to protect, calm and deeply hydrate the skin. What stands out about the Nutrient Day Creams is that it absorbs beautifully into the skin, and although it contains SPF, it is truly lightweight and works beautifully under makeup. On days when I’ll be spending more time in the sun I reach for the Luzern Labs La Defense Urban Protect Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30*. I love the texture of this cream and it helps to shield the skin against UV rays, blue light, and environmental stressors. It’s very hydrating, albeit a bit heavy, so I don’t like it under makeup.
Eye cream: I personally find it quite difficult to find a good eye cream – I don’t have many reviews of them on the blog. It’s easy to discern if the texture works for your needs, but I find that you really need to give them a good amount of time to see any effects. While I do still love my Kahina Eye Serum, I find sometimes I need more hydration around the eye area. The Luzern Force de Vie Eye Contour Creme* provides excellent lightweight hydration and contains ingredients to firm, reduce puffiness, brighten and reduce fine lines. It features a metal applicator which feels cool on application. I’m not noticing any substantial decrease in fine lines around my eye area, but honestly I don’t think I will at my age.
In the PM
Cleanser: If I wore makeup during the day I’ll do a double cleanse, starting with either the Elizabeth Dehn for One Love Organics Vitamin B Enzyme Cleansing Oil on hotter days, or MOA The Green Balm if my skin feels like it needs more hydration. I spend a good amount of time massaging the balms into the skin to help get the blood flowing and to help clear congestion, then wipe it away with a warm, damp face cloth (this is the best). As I mentioned before, I’m done with harsh cleanser, so I double cleanse with only products that add hydration to the skin, like the May Lindstrom Honey Mud or Lilfox Jungle Glow Rainforest Honey Enzyme Cleanser + Mask.* They both offer excellent hydration, the Honey Mud is gentler, while the Jungle Glow offers some physical exfoliation – I prefer the latter as I notice more visible results.
Serum/Oil: I use the same serums and oils in the evening as I do in the morning, while implementing skin care tools. I will use a derma roller (more on this soon) 2-3 times a week, after applying the Twelve Beauty Moisture Level Serum and following up with my oils. I’ve experienced amazing benefits from using a derma roller, especially under my eye area. I also try to use a gua sha tool to jade roller as often as I can, after moisturizer.
Cream: A long-standing favorite is the Bottega Organica Overnight Renewal Cream, this stuff is amazing and nothing I found compares to its intensely hydrating abilities (you can read my review here). It’s incredible at plumping the skin, erasing any dehydration lines, and it makes my skin dewy upon awaking. I’ll admit it gets pricey keeping this cream on hand, and it has a short 2 month expiration, but it is surely a game changer!.
I mask often, I swear by it and alternate between a few favorites according to my skin’s need. I’ll reach for a detoxifying mask about 2 times per week, a gentle exfoliation mask 2-3 times a week and a deep hydrating mask once a week. You can click here to see some of my absolute favorites.
