Manuka Honey for the Skin and Some Love for Our Honeybees #beeaware

When friends, family and readers inquire about a product suggestion for the treatment of acne, my constant recommendation is honey! Actually, you don’t need to ask, I’ll point my finger to your spot and tell you to “just rub a little honey on it”. I must strongly emphasize that I am not referring to just any honey, but specifically raw, organic manuka honey with an activity level of 12-16. You can rub any run-of-the-mill honey into your skin until you are red in the face and not receive the benefits specific to this certain variety.

Wedderspoon-organic-raw-manuka-honey-16

Manuka Honey hails from New Zealand and is collected from honeybees that pollinate the native Manuka bush and it is powerful! No prescription strength cream or OTC spot treatment works in the wondrous ways as this “medical honey.” With naturally occurring antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties (due to a naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide component) it works in numerous ways to treat, heal and prevent pesky break-outs. Manuka Honey is also a natural humectant and helps to draw moisture into the skin.

Manuka Honey has been achieving a ton of buzz as it has been revealed a skin care staple for some well-known celebrities including Jessica Alba, Karlie Kloss and Petra Nemcova, and its no surprise. This special variety is a skin care superhero of sorts for treating a multitude of skin concerns, while leaving your skin soft, smooth and glowing. You can incorporate honey into your skin care in a multitude of ways. Use it as a cleanser, mask (alone or mixed with other powdered masks or spices) and as a spot treatment. Since Manuka Honey works wonders on the prevention of breakouts, its rare that I need to use it as a spot treatment, as long as I am using it regularly. A few of my favorite spices to add to a Manuka Honey mask is cinnamon, turmeric, nutmeg or raw cacao. For a super hydrating and exfoliating mask, I mix in avocado and plain yogurt. I whole-heartedly recommend ingesting this magical nectar as well.

When it comes to choosing a honey, Wedderspoon sets the standards for providing RAW, NATURAL and UNPASTEURIZED honey and they are the first and only Non-GMO verified Manuka Honey nationwide. As a eco-conscious brand, Wedderspoon has teamed up with the Rodale Institute (a non-profit dedicated to pioneering organic farming through research and outreach) to celebrate honeybees. This campaign was created to raise awareness around the decline in honeybee populations due to the effects of toxic agricultural chemicals (CCD). As I have discovered the benefits of Manuka Honey, I have gained a great amount of love and respect for our honeybees. They are an integral part of our food system as pollinators. So join me in helping to support our honeybees by following the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #beeaware.

The Acne Solution

Acne can certainly be a pain to treat. I’ve suffered only minor break-outs throughout my adolescence, only to later have a bad bout of it in my mid-twenties. I was left frustrated as I trialed through a countless assortment of over the counter and prescription strength creams, to no avail. It wasn’t until I switched up my skin care routine to include all natural treatments and remedies, with the inclusion of a skin cleansing machine, that I cleared my skin up. Through my love for skin care and fondness for sampling new products, I feel I’ve perfected my clear-skin routine. I know this method works because if I slip up on my routine, my skin reacts instantly, but that’s ok because I got it covered. I’m hoping that though my experience I can help you to find your acne solution. the-acne-solution

The Cleanser

Shea Terra Argan Oil & Acacia Honey Api-Therapy Facial Wash – I discovered this product through a subscription sampling service. After a few days of use, I was blown away by how clear it made my skin. If I’m ever without it, my skin reacts almost instantly. I use this gentle cleanser in the mornings and in the evenings with a Clarisonic, after I’ve removed my makeup. (see my review) (buy)

The Toner

S.W. Basics of Brooklyn Toner – This toner alone has tuned me into a ACV devotee. I attribute this 5-ingredient all-natural toner for keeping my skin calm and my PH in check.  (see my review) (buy)

The All Purpose Treatment

Wedderspoon 100% Raw Manuka Honey Active 16+ – If you haven’t already, its time to get on the Manuka Honey bandwagon. Wedderspoon’s Manuka Honey works wonders as a spot treatment for blemishes. Any break-out will literally be gone overnight without a trace. You won’t be left with any unsightly redness or dryness, as with your typical spot treatments. Manuka Honey works beautifully as a face mask, not only to keep break-outs away, but also to intensely hydrate and nourish the skin. I also use it for a quick cleanse in the mornings alone, or mixed in with an exfoliating powder. Since witnessing the miracle this ingredient has done to my skin, I’ve actually starting consuming it regularly. (buy)

S.W. Basics Toner

Less is more when it comes to the brand concept behind the skin care line S.W. Basics. This Brooklyn-based company offers a complete line of skin care with each product containing five ingredients or less. Their five ingredient Toner, which contains water, apple cider vinegar, witch hazel and the essential oils clary sage and sandlewood, has become a staple in my skin care routine.

sw-basics-toner

S.W. Basics Toner balances the skin’s ph and evens skin tone. It’s a great option for any skin type, especially acne-prone and, as I have discovered, a cure for a finicky skin condition called Seborrheic Dermatitis. During a stressful time period in my life, I started to develop this painful facial skin affliction. After trialing both natural and prescription treatments, and after some research, I was lead to this all-natural wonder. Within days my skin cleared up and with daily use I’ve hardly suffered a recurrence. Thank you S.W. Basic for creating this amazing toner!

One huge standout these past couple of months is the S.W. Basics Toner. This products alone has completely cured a nasty bout of Seborrheic Dermatitis that I was dealing with. Shea Terra Argan Oil and Acacia Honey Facial Wash (Api-Therapy)

Shea Terra is a brand that continuously impresses me as I further familiarize myself with their extensive line. This do-good brand features a large variety of natural and organic products that come at a great value. A definite must-try from the line is their Argan Oil and Acacia Honey Facial Wash. I discovered this facial wash when it was included in one of my sample boxes from Goodebox, I was instantly hooked.

shea-terra-api-therapy

The Argan Oil and Acacia Honey Api-Therapy Facial Wash (boy that’s a mouthful) contains wild harvested African honey, shea butter, argan oil, coconut oil and olive oil. It effectively cleanses skin deep down, ever so gently. It smoothes, softens and feels nourishing even on my dry skin. Since incorporating this cleanser into my skin care routine (along with my weekly Manuka Honey Masks) break-outs are far and few between. I might even call them a non occurance, even when my monthly cycle approaches. Do be cautious not to get this in your eyes, it’s a vicious thing.
