Dreamy Picks: Neutral & Luminous Beauty for Spring

These days I’ve been a bit more minimalistic with my makeup, opting for easy, fool-proof formulas that enhance the skin. I’ve been on a journey of beauty discovery and have come across some absolute gems that are either new releases, or just new to me. Here’s a look at some products that I’ve been loving lately, with a plentitude of bronze tones and soft pink hues.

Milk Makeup Sunshine Skin Tint SPF30 (Light): Milk Makeup is a brand that has piqued my interest for some time, maybe for its sleek minimalistic packaging and its general “less is more” “girl on the go” vibe, or perhaps because it’s a newer line and as a bona-fide beauty junkie, I must try is all! As an ever curious foundation aficionado, the Sunshine Skin Tint seemed like the best place to start, and it’s love! The Tint is a super lightweight liquid foundation with SPF30 offering light, but not too light, coverage. The rollerball packaging is quite unique, but totally functional. You just pump the bottom to release the product and roll the ball across your face, then blend. It’s vitally effortless in application, with enough courage to balance out your complexion, as it appears to additionally minimize the appearance of pores. The finish is dewy and glowing. It’s perfect for those “no makeup, makeup days” – it just makes the skin look good. I have the shade light, which is a touch too pale for my skin tone, but with its lighter coverage I can get away with it.

Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer (Custard): Ugh, concealers are not an easy area to navigate, they are just all so awful! In fear of more disappointment, it took me a while to warm up to the idea of trying yet another one, but my recent battle with seasonal allergies demanded more coverage. Believe me when I say, the hype is real! The Soft Matte Complete Concealer is the ultimate! My under eye area is generally dry and most concealers just suck all of the moisture out of my skin, leaving my under eyes looking crepey. Nars hit the mark with this new formula which just so beautifully melts into the skin, blending out like a dream with minimal to no creasing. I do set the inner corners of my under eye where I experience the most creasing, but I’m sure that some can skip the powder entirely. I use the shade Custard, which I initially thought would be too deep for me, but it just blends right into my skin.

Maya Chia The Highlight of the Day Illuminating Serum (Golden Hour): Maya Chia, creators of the exquisite line of skincare, released an illuminating serum in two shades: The Golden Hour (warm, champagne gold) and The Happy Hour (cool pink). I’ve been meaning to share a review of this product sooner because I am utterly in love! I picked up The Golden Hour just a few days after it was released and I have been wearing it almost daily. The Illuminating Serum is truly versatile, it works beautifully under, over or even added into your foundation (no matter the formula). However, I do find myself most often opting to add it into my foundation. The Golden Hour is a stunningly beautiful champagne gold that adds a subtle luminosity to the skin, with no discernible shimmer. It is technically skincare and features Maya Chia’s hero ingredient, supercritical chia oil, along with broccoli seed oil, calendula flower extract and rosemary leaf extract. It also has such a beautiful clean scent.

Fitglow Beauty Mineral Blush (Sculpt): I’ve briefly mentioned my love for this contouring powder before, but I thought I would share some more love as its been a staple in my beauty routine. To be totally honest, I’ve packed on a few lbs, which I’m not too happy about. While I’m working on getting that under control, I’ve been sculpting my fuller face to make me feel a bit better about it. The Fitglow Beauty Mineral Blush in Sculpt is the perfect contouring shade for my skin tone, it’s not too cool nor too warm. While it’s not “super” pigmented I feel like that’s a good thing, as it allows me to be more modest in application.

Jillian Dempsey Lid Tint (Bronze): The Lid Tints are cream eye shadows that offer a sheer wash of color and a glossy finish. I utterly love a glossy lid, but I often just can’t deal with the creasing that comes along with it. In comparison to the RMS Eye Polish, I experience far less creasing with the Lid Tints, however, they do not blend as well or offer as much of a wet look. They feel a bit tacky on the lid, but do offer a beautiful glossy effect indeed. The shade Bronze, is a beautiful neutral bronze shade that can be built up for more color payoff.

Olio E Osso Tinted Balm (No. 5): The Olio E Osso Balms are multi-purpose and available in clear or tinted versions. What stands out about the Tinted Balm is its superior hydrating abilities. They have a super short list of ingredients, including organic olive oil, shea oil, beeswax and pink grapefruit essential oils – yes they smell amazing. The tinted versions offer a sheer, dewy wash of color. I personally love using the balm on both my lips and cheeks. When applied to the cheeks, it does remain a bit tacky, which I personally don’t mind. I’m really into that dewy look and it makes the skin look really good, although it does require frequent touch-ups. I have the shade No. 5 Currant, which is a raisin shade that beautifully complements bronze tones.

Kevyn Aucoin Molten Lip Color Topcoat (Cyber Opal): The most recent release from Kevyn Aucoin includes 6 Metallic Liquid Lipsticks and 2 Metallic Lip Color Topcoats. I just picked up the Lip Color Topcoat in Cyber Opal at the recent Sephora VIB Sale – the pink opalescent hue really spoke to me. Cyber Opal is a milky pink with a beautiful opalescent finish. The formula is beautifully smooth and surprisingly pigmented, I need to go a bit light on my application, otherwise this shade is a bit too pale for my complexion, or I pair it with a deeper lip shade. It is truly long-wearing, hydrating and completely odorless – which I love. The doe foot applicator features a curved design, which hugs your lips on application.

Nails INC Mindful Manicure (Better Together): Nails INC infuses their polishes with real gemstones to promote a “spiritual feel” in their most recent nail polish collection. I actually picked up 3 out of the 5 new shade releases. Better Together is my favorite of the bunch, its a soft blush shade with an iridescent finish. It applies beautifully, while I’m not too sure of any enhancements on my aura, they sure are pretty!

Dreamy Picks: March

  • Lina Hanson recently debuted her Satori Perfume Oil, as I reviewed here. This blend of warm vanilla, sandalwood, yuzu and ginger is utterly intoxicating, and an easy stand-out amid my favorites for the month.
  • Au Naturale’s Lipstick in Innocence has been my daily go-to since I first got my hands on it. It’s the perfect soft pink and has a balmy texture. I’m nearly close to finishing it, which is something I’ve only done once before. If your curious as to what that lipstick was, it was MAC Bubbles. I was 16 and had a white, shimmery pout and I loved it.
  • Jane Iredale’s Lip Definers are deliciously creamy, a favorite formula for sure. The shade Spice is the perfect pinky-nude, that is just a touch deeper than my natural lip color. It pairs brilliantly with Au Naturale Innocence.
  • Kari Gran Lip Whips are a divine treat for your pout. The shade Radiance is a beautiful glossy pink, that is perfect on it own, or layered over any lip shade. (review)
  • Prickly Pear Seed Oil is having moment. I am unequivocally a devout fan of this precious wonder oil (review). I apply Kahina’s Pricky Pear Seed Oil to my eye area, both day and night. The results have been nothing short of a miracle. My under eye area has significantly lightened, so much so, that I have been able to switch up my under-eye concealer to one that offers less coverage. Which leads me to…
  • Though not nearly short on coverage, the RMS “Un” Cover Up is a brilliant under-eye concealer. It’s no secret, as this product is highly coveted by the industry elites. It covers, yet offers an undetectable finish ‘goals’. I do like to set the ‘Un” Cover Up with the RMS “Un” Powder, as the formula is quite creamy. (review)
  • Speaking of “undetectable finishes”, I introduce you to the ‘mother’. The Gressa Minimalist Serum Foundation is one ingenious formula. Forget that it’s completely natural, forget that it is actually good for your skin. This formula trumps all serum foundations on the market today, be it ‘clean’ or not. Two to three drops is all that is needed. It glides across your face with no effort at all, leaving behind the most natural coverage. I am currently wearing a mix of shades 3 and 4.
  • Kumari Luxury Sandalwood and Magnolia Body Oil makes me feel as though I’m spoiling myself on the regular. I am smitten with the fragrance of this oil, and of course I adore how it nourishes my skin. (review)
  • I have recently posted about the Imbibe Pearl Essence Cleansing Mineral Treatment. This  powdered cleanser effectively washes away impurities in the most gentlest way. I’ve been adding this versatile treatment powder into my shampoo, as recommended, with excellent results. It has been helping to normalize my finicky scalp.
  • The Jurlique Wrinkle Sofening Cream is an excellent moisturizer for dry skin. I’m not certain why I haven’t shared this product yet, though I feel a review is certainly in order. This is my second tube and a go-to for when I’m in need of extra moisture. In considering the recent weather conditions here in New York, I’ve been reaching for this one regularly.

RMS “un” cover-up as a foundation

RMS “un” cover-up is an all natural and organic concealer. I wrote about it previously as a cover-up. The “un” cover-up was created to be used an all-over face foundation as well. I created this additional post to show you how I use this product as a foundation and to show you the results that you can expect.

Perhaps because coconut oil is the first ingredient in RMS’ “un” cover-up, it melts beautifully into the skin. It is easy to blend and provides light coverage while concealing skin-imperfections. When I use this as a foundation I don’t feel concerned for my skin. I know that while I am covering and concealing I am also providing my skin with natural and healthy nourishment. The “un” cover-up is especially wonderful for those with dry skin, I find it very moisturizing.

When using the “un” cover up as a foundation, I first mist my skin with a moisture mist, my current favorite is this one from Sanitas. However, this product will blend whether or not your skin is pre-moistened. I then place some concealer onto one area of my face at a time with my fingertips. With a lightly moistened compact foundation sponge I blend the product into my skin using a light rolling/dabbing motion. I continue this all over the rest of my face. I layer extra product, using my finger, where more coverage is needed. (this is all that I have done in the image below) You can see that the concealer provided a very natural all-over look with a radiant finish. It also concealed a small pimple I had on my cheek rather well.

To set the “un” cover-up, I used a translucent loose setting powder, like this one from Laura Mercier. I then sprayed my face again with the Sanita’s moisture spray to melt the powder and bring back the luminous finish. This product is very creamy and I find that it does not set like a liquid foundation would. I find that I have to use more powder to rid of any remaining tackiness. The only thing I disliked about this product is the weight it seemed to carry on my skin. Otherwise the end result is quite stunning. I personally opt to use this foundation on my days off to treat my skin and to give it a break.

Have you tried the “un” cover-up?

RMS “un” cover-up

RMS “un” cover-up is “formulated to reveal and enhance healthy skin. “ This creamy, hydrating concealer provides nourishment to the skin while concealing imperfections. It can be used to cover  the under-eye area, dark marks, and blemishes or used all over as a foundation. Due to its creaminess, it provides a dewy, radiant appearance while not settling into fine lines. The finished look is incredibly natural. The “un” cover-up won Allure’s “Best of Beauty” award for ‘natural wonder’ two years in a row as a natural concealer.

The “un cover-up” contains all natural and certified ingredients. RMS creator Rose-Marie Swift has an incredible philosophy towards beauty and cosmetics, sourcing only the highest quality ingredients and taking “extreme care in the use of minimal heat in the manufacturing process of this product in order to keep all nutrients and healing properties alive.” This is why you are going to have to drop $36 for this product if you want it. These ingredients are:

cocos nucifera (coconut) oil*,
ricinus communis (castor) seed oil*,
cera alba (beeswax)*,
theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter*,
simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil*,
tocopherol (non-gmo),
rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) extract*

I picked up #22 for light-medium skin with warm, olive, or neutral undertones. Upon first impressions I was quite certain that #22 was going to be far to dark for my skin tone especially considering the intention of using this product mainly as an under-eye concealer. However, after applying, it seemed to blend rather well under my eye area, matching the rest of my face quite flawlessly. The creamy consistency blended beautifully without any dragging. I used a concealer brush then pat the area with my fingertips to thoroughly blend. There was no settling into the creases under my eye area.

My under-eye circles are a bit of a stressor for me. My dark circles require a full-coverage concealer. While the un-cover up provided exceptional coverage, it was not quite ample enough for my requirements. Ultimately, I highly recommend this concealer to those who don’t have similar needs to mine. I think this concealer would suite the average persons needs very well. The consistency, as well as it’s and beneficial ingredients are the tops for your everyday concealer.

Despite my reservations, I tested this product as a foundation. I was beyond impressed with it versatile performance. After moisturizing skin, and before applying the “un cover-up”, I moistened my skin with a mist (RMS  un cover-up doesn’t require pre-moisturized skin). I dabbed the concealer using my fingers onto areas of my face. I then continued to blend the product using a compact foundation sponge. I was fascinated by the way this product blended seamlessly into my skin, matching perfectly to my skin-tone. The end result was flawless and exceptionally radiant with a highly-natural look. I hadn’t anticipated such a fabulous blending capability with a “concealer-like” formulation. The product did however carry a bit of weight on my skin.

I can imagine using this as a luminizer as well, incorporating it into my highlight/contour routine. It is also fabulous to drop in your purse for touch-ups.

I provided before and after photo’s to help show the pigmentation issues that I have. I am wearing only mascara in the before photo, and RMS “un” cover-up and mascara in the after photo. I applied the cover-up under my eye area and in the inner corner of my eye blending slightly on to my lid. The “un” cover-up did a beautiful job, but their still remains some discoloration that I wish to further disguise.

I highly recommend RMS “un” cover-up to those who wish to conceal light to moderate dark circles, light skin discolorations and acne, or to those seeking a natural makeup with medium coverage.

It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye

Bye Bye Under Eye is a full coverage waterproof concealer with Hydro-Collagen and vitamins C and K to treat as you conceal. This concealer hide’s the deepest of under eye circles while it helps to reduce under eye puffiness, discoloration, and works to strengthen the under eye area.  The consistency of this formula is truly unique. It is thick and cream. The tiniest amount is needed to provide exceptional coverage for under eye circles. The formula is very moisturizing and it creates a shine, so it is necessary to set the concealer with powder.

The area under my eyes has been a insecurity of mine and I am always on the hunt for something better to disguise their appearance. I have tried countless products to treat the discoloration to no avail. I also have a scar below my eye that I have had much difficulty in concealing. Upon discovering Bye Bye Under Eye I have found my Holy Grail of concealers. This product is amazing and has done wonders for my complexion, it provides ample coverage without ever looking cakey. This product has found its way into my daily makeup routine and into my product favorites. I also find myself skipping foundation because my under eye area is brightened with use of this concealer alone. It also helps to minimize the appearance and texture of my scar.

I wear Bye Bye Under Eye concealer in Medium. If you are light skin toned I would opt for Medium. Some people go too light on their concealer and I urge against this, the results are unnatural and strange looking. I might even purchase a tan and mix the two because this color is a tad light for summer. For application I apply a pea-sized amount on to the back of my hand, this should be enough product for both eyes. I prefer to use Real Techniques Deluxe Crease Brush to buff the product into my skin, allowing flawless application. Their is also a Dual Concealer Retractable brush available from It Cosmetics for this specific product which looks promising. I them pat the area with my finger and apply a translucent Micronized powder to set and reduce the shine, such as Tarte smooth Operator. The effects are incredible and lasts all day. Much love for this product!
