Fresh Umbrian Clay Foundation

Fresh Umbrian Clay foundation is a “purifying and balancing treatment foundation that refines and hydrates the skin. Fresh’s exclusive Umbrian Clay removes impurities from the skin to refine, nourish, and balance the complexion while Porphyridium Cruentum, a micro-algae extract, retains optimal moisture levels throughout the day.” Contains an SPF of 20.

The Umbrian Clay Foundation from Fresh is nothing less than magnificent. This product has been among my favorites for perhaps a bit longer than five years now. With especially high standards for a foundations performance, a great one is hard to come by. I am not quite sure why it as taken so long for me to review this product, as per request I am doing it now. I apologize for keeping this product from you for too long.

Fresh’s Umbrian Clay foundation contains skin healthy ingredients including their Umbrian Clay, micro-algae extract, antioxidants A C and E and Seawater. The foundation has a fabulous creamy consistency unlike other foundations, and not dissimilar to a BB cream. The application is dreamy having the ability to blend with great ease, your fingers will do. The foundation provides medium coverage while giving the illusion of a face free of makeup. It is virtually undetectable on the skin, which I feel is one of the most important qualities of a good makeup. Girls… you shouldnt see it!

Now I have good skin, but during a time when I suffered from frequent breakouts this is the makeup I used. It also did not clog my pores or exacerbate my troubled skin. It provides excellent coverage, so well in fact that you will find yourself applying less concealer. I can sometimes forgo under eye cover-up when I wear this foundation. For a makeup with a bit more coverage, I highly reccomend this one. The end result is a flawless complexion with a radiant finish.

Fresh foundation comes in a selection of 7 shades. While I am a prefect match for Rio Samba during the summertime when my skin is a deeper tone, I have trouble finding a match for my skin during the winter months. In the image below I have featured the Rio Samba on my very pale winter skin, I hope you can still gain an idea of the fomula and coverage.

What I used:

  • Fresh Umbrian Clay Freshface Foundation SPF 20 in Rio Samba – applied to skin with a Real Techniques stippling brush
  • It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer in medium –  applied using a Real Techniques deluxe crease brush to under eye area, I find it best to use this brush when applying this unique concealer (review to come)
  • Nars Multiple in Laguna – as base on eyelids and brought underneath eyes with a flat eyeshadow brush
  • MAKE UP FOR EVER Star Powder in 930 Bronze/Brown – with a clean flat eyes shadow brush I pressed this loose pigment onto my lids and brought it under my eye, I then took a blending brush and blended the shadow well in my crease
  • Urban Decay Naked Palette colors Half Baked and Darkhorse – using a blending brush I took Darkhorse and applied it to the outer edge of my crease and upper eyelid making a V shape and took it to the outer edge of my lower lash line. With the flat brush I pressed some Half Baked onto the center of eyelid and onto the center of lower lash line blending outwards into the darker color.
  • MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Liner in Mat Black – applied to upper lash line bringing it slightly outwards past me eye
  • Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes in Black – applied to upper and lower lashes
  • Sephora Collection False Eye Lashes in Flutter – outer corner lashes
  • Fresh Bronzing Face Luster in Marbella Gold – (item discontinued – im sorry to say, I snagged up a couple before I couldn’t get any) (recommendation – Too Face Soleil Matte Milk Chocolate Bronzer) I contoured my face using bronzer under my cheekbones, onto my temples and under jawline
  • Jemma Kidd Dewy Glow All Over Radiance Creme in iced gold – using my finger I applied this highlighter to brow bone, cheek bones, and inner corner of eyes
  • Tarte Smooth Operator finishing powder – applied very lightly to my t-zone and under eyes to set make up
  • Nars Lipstick in Belle de Jour

Winter/Summer Foundation Swap

As the warmer months approach it’s time to take a good look at your current makeup routine and consider how it will translate into your summer routine. Now is the time to swap out our current foundations for lighter formulations and warmer color choices. I swatched my winter and summer foundations below to give you an idea of how much they can vary. My winter foundation, as you can see, is probably about two shades lighter than the winter. It is also a more moisturizing formulation than my summer choice. You will notice in the way it feels on your skin whether or not your foundation is to heavy for the summer months. If you are aware that you are wearing foundation it is probably to heavy for you. In transition I to mix the two, adding more of the darker foundation as my skin becomes tanner.

While I do know some people who avoid the sun’s rays at all costs and stay the same color year round. I don’t think it is necessary for them to change their color foundation if the formulation is working for their skin. I do however think that everyone can gain something from warming up their skin tone. It just makes us glow and look healthier. I recommend adding a bit of bronzing gel to your foundation, Clarin’s makes some good ones. You can control the color by mixing it with your foundation. It is also more natural looking than powder bronzer.
