Get the Look: Glowing Skin

The most important step to achieving a “glowing” look is a dedicated skin care routine, more on that later. While some of us have skin troubles, there are steps everyone can take to help them achieve a more luminous appearance.

Start by:

  • Exfoliating skin in the morning with a soft wash cloth or muslin cloth using a non-drying face wash avoid foaming formulas – think creamy! (this will get rid of dead skin cells that your skin has shed overnight)
  • Apply a toner like Caudalie Beauty Elixir
  • Use a serum rich in antioxidants (this is the first step in moisturizing)
  • Apply your daily moisturizer (if your skin feels dry after this, you are not using the right moisturizer)

The Makeup:

  • Tinted Moisturizer – choose a tinted moisturizer for a radiant/sheer finish, apply all over face using fingertips, I used Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, which is fantastic, see my review
  • Under Eye Concealer – choose a creamy formulation that plays with light and does not settle into lines, I used Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer by It Cosmetics (review) , also try Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Concealer
  • A Creamy Blush – the tip is to avoid powder products where you can, you want moist, sheer color- I used Korres Cheek butter in Philia Rose, also try Tarte Cheek Stains (amazing!)
  • Shadow – opt for a sheer shimmering shadow in a warm tone, I am wearing Too Faced Summer Eye Collection – colors sugar sand and cocoa beach
  • Highlighter – highlight cheekbones circling around to brow-bone, down the center of nose, inner corner of eyes, and on the bow of your lip – I used Jemma Kidd All Over Radiance Creme in Iced Gold, also try Benefit’s High Beam
  • Powder – with a very light hand apply a small amount of powder to your t-zone only, I prefer using a soft fan brush when doing this to apply the lightest amount, choose a Micronized transluscent powder (the tops for avoiding a powdery look) I used Laura Mercier’s, also try Tarte Smooth Operator
  • Set – further set the rest of your face with a makeup setting spray, I use Caudelie Beauty Elixer, or try urban decay’s all nighter
  • Lips – I avoid glossy lips when doing this look and just opt for a balm, please choose whatever you wish, I am wearing Korres Lip Butter in Pomegranate

For the Curly Girls – Get it straight and keep it that way!

The no-frizz line from living proof weightlessly blocks humidity 70% better than silicone and oils. Living proof uses a “miracle molecule, OFPMA which eliminates frizz by blocking humidity, smooths without weighing hair down, and repels dirt to keep hair cleaner, longer. OPFMA adheres tightly and uniformly to the hair shaft, smoothing and sealing the cuticles, allowing for a long-lasting humidity resistance and supremely sleek strands, The best part is that you can never overuse No Frizz and with each use your frizz defense strengthens.” (from livingproof.com)

What some people may not know about me  is that my hair is naturally curly, not wavy, but kinky curly. The saying usually goes “you want what you don’t have” and in my case this rings true when referring to my frizzy, unmanageable curls. You will almost never see me with curly hair. While I don’t have much of a problem achieving and maintaining my straight hair in the cooler weather, once the humidity stikes, forget about it. I can blow-dry and flat-iron my hair till its pin straight, but once I step outside the humidity in the air springs my curls right back. So in the past I have been a big fan of buns, braids and hats come summertime. That is until I discovered this product.

No Frizz Styling Cream by Living Proof has changed the game for me. I can now straighten my hair and keep it that way in any weather, until my next wash. This styling cream locks out moisture and keeps the frizz away while also making my hair feel silky-soft and weightless. I have been faithful to this product since I discovered it three years ago at my local Sephora. I have never strayed and was hardly impressed when I underwent a Brazillian Blowout. This product also speeds up the blow-drying process, drying your hair faster and getting straighter in less time. You could skip the flat-iron.

Living proof states that “you can’t use too much” which is completely accurate. I have never applied too much of this product, my hair never feels heavy or full of product. I apply about a quarter-size amount or slightly more to damp hair and comb through, then blow dry my hair in sections. My hair remains straight and frizz-free all day long. I highly recommend this product to not only those with curly hair but to anyone having trouble fighting frizz. This styling cream is outstanding and this review is 100% honest.

You can get it at Nordstrom, Sephora, or LivingProof.com

Deborah Lippmann ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ Half Moon Nail Art

I recieved my “Snow White and the Huntsman” polish set from Deborah Lippmann in the mail today. I practically ripped the packaging pulling the polishes out in a desperate need for new look. I polished my nails with the light nude color, prelude to a kiss, and applied the deep plum polish on top creating a half-moon effect by hand. I recommend using french manicure stickers for those who need some assistance creating this look.

Tips & Tricks – Supermodel Legs

Follow this trick to achieve flawless summer legs. Make your skin glow and lengthen your legs while hiding slight imperfections. You will look ready to strut the Victoria’s Secret runways

What you need:

  • coconut oil (I used this gardenia scented one from the french brand Monoi Tiki, the scent is delectable for summer. You can get it at Vitacost.com)
  • foundation (choose a deeper tone)
  • loose shimmer (use a peach shimmer for lighter skin-tones and a gold shimmer for darker skin-tones, avoid white/pearl tones to avoid looking ashy, this is a sample I had from The All Natural Face, check out loose eye shadow’s from OCC, MAKE UP FOR EVER, and NYX)

In the palm of your hand mix a tablespoon amount of coconut oil, two pumps of foundation, and your desired amount of shimmer. I dipped my ring finger in the loose shimmer to grab just a small amount, avoid shaking the shimmer into your palm to control the amount used. Simply rub the mixture onto the entire length of your legs. I would let the mixture dry into the skin for a bit before dressing and heading out into the heat. Follow these steps for summer-ready legs.

the Balm Meet Matt(e) Eyeshadow Palette

The Meet Matte Palette from the Balm is a varied collection of matte eye shadows. The palette is a 3 1/2  by 3 1/2 cardboard square that flips opens like book to reveal a mirror while a magnet holds it closed. The eye shadows in this collection are buttery smooth, silky and super easy to work with. The colors are highly pigmented and allow you to blend seamlessly. If you are into matte eyeshadow and like to change up your look then this is the palette for you.

There is a great selection of colors in this set that can create endless looks with both warm and cool tones. Matt Smith and Matt Chung are two great options for a base. Matt Gallagher is the perfect crease color and among my favorites. To create some depth along with Gallagher,  Matt Patel and Matt Ramirez are great options to add to the outer crease. Matt McDonald is great for a grey smokey look. For a blue smokey look Matt Shilling and Horowitz work great together. The options are truly endless. All is all this is a great palette of high quality shadows that I recommend.

  • Matt Smith –  a matte light beige (great base color)
  • Matt Gallagher -a matte  medium brown, toast
  • Matt Ramirez – a matte cool dark brown
  • Matt McDonald – a steel-blue grey with pearl sheen
  • Matt Horrowitz – a deep blue
  • Matt Chung – light pale pink
  • Matt Batali – a rich dark eggplant, plum
  • Matt Schilling – a matte teal
  • Matt Patel – a matte mauve with brown

I created this look by applying Matt Chung all over my lid into my brow bone. I then added Matt Gallagher into the crease along with Matt Batali to the outer edge of my crease creating a v-shape and sweeping it under my eye as well.

Self-Tanning Essentials

The only two products you need to keep you tan all summer long. No Fancy tanner’s or scrubs needed, these are my favorite’s.

Jergens Natural Glow Express is an excellent self-tanner that give you a believable tan in 4 hours. It come’s in two shades light and medium. Here.

Bath and Shower gloves for exfoliating skin. Available at drug stores.

How-to & Tips:

– Before you tan, exfoliate in the shower with bath and shower gloves concentrating on extra dry areas, such as tops of feet, elbows and knees. Use a moisturizing soap or shower gel free of oils.

– Towel dry skin and apply Jergens Natural Glow Express evenly from head to toe including face. Apply a lighter application on areas of body prone to dryness.

– To help dry areas of body to have seemless application I apply a heavy moisturizer immediately afterwards to tops of feet, elbows, knees, and area behind the knees.

– Reapply tanning moisturizer daily until you have reached your desired intensity.

– Avoid getting on clothing. Wait till moisturizer is fairly dry before dressing. I choose to do this in the evenings.

– Wash hands after application. To tan hands I apply a heavy moisturizer to skin before applying the self-tanner. With a damp towel wipe nail beds as the tanner can accumulate there leaving the skin around your nails dirty looking.

– Avoid contact with water until tanner is completely dry! A droplet of water will leave a visible mark on the skin. No sweating!

– Repeat every 5-7 days.

I hope this has helped you. I have been self-tanning for over 13 years (wow) and have developed this perfected method. If you havent gotten on the self-tanning boat it’s time to get on board. Don’t be afraid, try a lighter shade at first if your are fearful. Save your skin by self-tanning now and try to avoid sun bathing. Always use an SPF, you will thank yourself years from now. I stopped sun-bathing at 18 and am thankful that I have chosen to do so. I can see a remarkable difference between my skin and other women my age who were sun worshipers and lathered themselves in oils. I love the beach, but I make sure to use the highest SPF available and remember to reapply often. Trust me it’s not worth it.

Be safe now and stay beautiful! Please leave any thoughts or questions.
