Reset your Complexion – Mahalo Skin Care Pele Mask

There is one product that I believe every woman should have on hand and that’s a detoxifying face mask. These deep cleansing masks typically contain some mineral-rich clays and are often seen in combination with bamboo activated charcoal powder and/or raw cacao. They basically work like a reset button for the skin, diving deep down into pores and extracting impurities, leaving skin clearer, more refined and radiant. I always say, if you’re not wowed by your results after one use, you’re not using the right mask. There a few masks in my beauty arsenal that have that wow factor, then when I met the Pele Mask from Mahalo Skin Care and was beside myself.

Manuka Honey for the Skin and Some Love for Our Honeybees #beeaware

When friends, family and readers inquire about a product suggestion for the treatment of acne, my constant recommendation is honey! Actually, you don’t need to ask, I’ll point my finger to your spot and tell you to “just rub a little honey on it”. I must strongly emphasize that I am not referring to just any honey, but specifically raw, organic manuka honey with an activity level of 12-16. You can rub any run-of-the-mill honey into your skin until you are red in the face and not receive the benefits specific to this certain variety.

Wedderspoon-organic-raw-manuka-honey-16

Manuka Honey hails from New Zealand and is collected from honeybees that pollinate the native Manuka bush and it is powerful! No prescription strength cream or OTC spot treatment works in the wondrous ways as this “medical honey.” With naturally occurring antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties (due to a naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide component) it works in numerous ways to treat, heal and prevent pesky break-outs. Manuka Honey is also a natural humectant and helps to draw moisture into the skin.

Manuka Honey has been achieving a ton of buzz as it has been revealed a skin care staple for some well-known celebrities including Jessica Alba, Karlie Kloss and Petra Nemcova, and its no surprise. This special variety is a skin care superhero of sorts for treating a multitude of skin concerns, while leaving your skin soft, smooth and glowing. You can incorporate honey into your skin care in a multitude of ways. Use it as a cleanser, mask (alone or mixed with other powdered masks or spices) and as a spot treatment. Since Manuka Honey works wonders on the prevention of breakouts, its rare that I need to use it as a spot treatment, as long as I am using it regularly. A few of my favorite spices to add to a Manuka Honey mask is cinnamon, turmeric, nutmeg or raw cacao. For a super hydrating and exfoliating mask, I mix in avocado and plain yogurt. I whole-heartedly recommend ingesting this magical nectar as well.

When it comes to choosing a honey, Wedderspoon sets the standards for providing RAW, NATURAL and UNPASTEURIZED honey and they are the first and only Non-GMO verified Manuka Honey nationwide. As a eco-conscious brand, Wedderspoon has teamed up with the Rodale Institute (a non-profit dedicated to pioneering organic farming through research and outreach) to celebrate honeybees. This campaign was created to raise awareness around the decline in honeybee populations due to the effects of toxic agricultural chemicals (CCD). As I have discovered the benefits of Manuka Honey, I have gained a great amount of love and respect for our honeybees. They are an integral part of our food system as pollinators. So join me in helping to support our honeybees by following the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #beeaware.

DIY At Home Facial

Once a week at-home facials can take your skin care to the next level and deliver tremendous results. While I rely on professional facials for physical extractions, I maintain my skin with a weekly facial to help keep my pores clear and my complexion radiant. I use these five key steps.

diy-at-home-facial-2

Cleanse:

Start by giving your skin a thorough ‘double cleansing’. First, remove makeup with a product intended to do just that. Follow up by using your favorite cleanser to completely cleanse the skin.

Exfoliate:

Use a gentle exfoliator to remove dead skin cells. My preference is one in a powdered form containing enzymes for an added chemical exfoliation, like Brand New Day from One Love Organics. Using your fingertips gently buff away, using small circular motions. Pay attention to areas that are more prone to dryness, and continue down your neck. Exfoliation is a key step in achieving a glowing complexion.

Steam:

Steaming your skin is a necessary, if often overlooked, step to detoxify the skin and open pores. By opening the pores, your skin will gain the maximum benefits for the next step, when you apply a facial mask. For a ‘no frills’ steam, position yourself over a pot of boiling water (not too close) and place a towel over your head to collect the steam. For extra benefits add in some herbs and essential oils.

Mask:

Directly after steaming, apply a deep-cleansing face mask, suitable for your skin type. I am a firm believer in the deep-cleansing benefits of clays and activated bamboo charcoal. These two ingredients will help draw out dirt and impurities, and tighten pores. The May Lindstrom’s The Problem Solver and Osmia Organics Detox Exfoliating Mask receive my highest recommendations.

Facial Massage:

A Facial Massage boosts circulation and stimulates the muscles and lymphatic system. By stimulating the facial muscles, you relieve tension and work to literally iron out fine lines. As you stimulate the lymphatic system you drain out toxins, reliving puffiness, which is incredibly beneficial for the eye area. The result is instant as your skin will appear smoother with a youthful radiance. All you need is a few minutes and your favorite face oil. Into the Gloss posted a how-to video that best shows how to perform a personal facial massage.

If you take the time to love your skin, your skin will love you back. By performing a ritual of pampering yourself, you promote feelings of self-love. Taking time to care for yourself is never selfish, but an integral part of our well-being. If a 5-step facial doesn’t agree with your schedule, break up the routine. Apply a mask post-shower or perform a facial massage in the evenings at bedtime. Whatever you can do, is better than nothing. Commit to skin-care.
