Virgin Coconut Oil: A Beauty Staple

It’s not news that coconut oil can be used in a variety of ways for our health, both internally and externally. With antioxidant, anti fungal, antibacterial, and soothing properties, just to name a few, coconut oil carries an array of benefits. The presence of lauric acid, captic acid and caprylic acid helps make this oil so beneficial. There are countless ways to utilize coconut oil for our health and I find more and more uses are sprouting up. Virgin coconut oil has found a place among beauty staples and I wanted to share with you the various ways in which I personally use it.

Moisturizer – Coconut oil can be used as a head to toe moisturizer. It isn’t as slick as some other oils and has a quicker rate of absorption. I love to use it in the summer to create a sheer and luminous finish on my skin, sometimes mixing it with foundation and a bit of shimmer to my legs (like I did here). After exfoliating, in the shower I will use it mixed along with some Vaseline and hang out in a terry robe. The next day my skin is baby soft! I have also heard it to be a good acne treatment.

Hair Mask  – This oil naturally mimics the oils found in our hair, I’ve actually heard it is the closest to it, making it the ultimate hair moisturizing treatment. I will coat my hair from scalp to ends, with about a quarter cup of oil an hour before showering, or use it as an overnight treatment. After use my hair does not feel limp and greasy. I recommend testing out how much product is right for you before venturing out of the house.

Scalp Treatment – My ultimate favorite use for coconut oil is as a scalp treatment. Coconut oil can be used as a treatment for various scalp issues including dandruff, psoriasis, dermatitis and even lice because of its anti fungal and antibacterial properties. I personally suffer from scalp dermatitis, which can be quite uncomfortable, my scalp often switching from dry to oily. Coconut oil, when massaged into my scalp, instantly soothes and regulates it, whether it is in a dry or oily stage. For people with scalp issues I highly recommend this instead of expensive scalp treatments that are loaded with chemicals, it has worked better than anything I have tried.

Base for homemade scrub – I will take 2 parts granulated sugar or salt (opting for dead sea mineral salt) and one part coconut oil, add a few drops of my favorite essential oils and use this as body scrub. It is fantastic to use this before a shave, with or without the scrub elements. The oil will protect your skin from the razor. You could also make a lip scrub using  two tablespoons of brown sugar, one tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of coconut oil. It works wonderfully!

Do you use coconut oil? I would love to hear how!
